ESA IMPLEMENTATION TIMELINE:
Education Savings Accounts, or ESAs, are administrated by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, who is Texas' accountant.
KEY ESA FACTS
- All Texas students, including current private and homeschool students, are eligible for ESAs.
- Applications will open by early 2026.
- ESAs will be around $11,000 for most families attending an accredited private school.
- Families will use ESAs for the first time in the 2026-2027 school year.
Important Dates:
- August 2025: the Comptroller is undergoing the process to select an Education Assistance Organization.
- September 1, 2025: the ESA bill goes into effect.
- Fall 2025: accredited private schools and education service providers can apply to participate in the program.
- Early 2026: all Texas parents will be eligible to apply for ESAs.
- Fall 2026: the 2026-2027 school year will start, and families will be able to use their ESAs.

Q: How are ESA recipients prioritized?
A: Every Texas child is eligible to receive an ESA. $1 billion has been appropriated for the program. If there are more applicants than program funds, then families will be prioritized based on the following criteria:
- Students with a disability whose families make less than $160,000 for a family of four.
- Students whose families make less than $64,000 for a family of four.
- Students whose families make between $64,001 and $160,000 for a family of four.
- Everyone else.
