Imani dominates ACSI Speech Competition
Imani scholars have done it again!
Our smallest orators took a cue from our National Champion, 8th Grader Taylor Mitchell, and dominated the 2010 ACSI Speech Meet. Of a possible 63 medals awarded, 24 were won by Imani students - roughly 40 percent of the highest honors given. Equally important, out of 12 participating schools, Imani was the only Black school in attendance.
Our elementary students performed extraordinarily well with an overall average of 45 out of 50 points. Students competed in categories such as Bible memorization, fables and folklore, poetry, original speech and patriotic oration. Even though Imani students numbered only 31 out of 212 participants, we brought home 11 gold, 10 silver and 3 bronze medals. In fact, four students earned a perfect score! Not to mention, 10 students scored 48 points or higher on their speeches.
The success students enjoyed at the ACSI Speech Meet demonstrates the quality and added value of Imani's speech department. At Imani, students in grades K-8 receive proper speech lessons twice a week. Imani Speech Instructor LaRita Wilson teaches students the core values of good public speaking such as using correct diction and intonation, changing pitch and making eye contact.
Congratulations 1st-6th graders, Mrs. Wilson and Ms. McNeil, ACSI coordinator, for all of your hard work preparing for the speech meet!
