My Imani

All Aboard!

The Imani School cafeteria was a stop on the route of the "Freedom Train."

Imani pupils in grades 1st-3rd boarded the "Freedom Train" and watched two Texas slaves' daring escape to freedom in Mexico. In the vein of our forefathers storytelling tradition, the professional acting troupe re-counted African American customs and painful lessons learned during slavery through a father and son's ride on the figurative freedom train.

As father and son traveled South to freedom, as many Texas slaves chose do because Mexico is closer than the North, "Papa" taught his son about moss growing on the North side of  the tree, how to fool slave catchers and other survival tips.

The heart-warming play revealed a tragic chapter in African American history, while showing our children the strength and perseverance our ancestors displayed in the struggle for equality and freedom.
