My Imani

Parents put your game face on!!

The 2nd Annual "Family Night Live!" was fantastic! This is one event you never want to miss!

The popular fun-filled night brought faculty, students, parents and administrators together to showcase a typical day at The Imani School.

Se habla espanol? Imani students do and they do so well thanks to Senor Romero who teaches Spanish and supplements traditional lessons with songs and Rosetta Stone. Parents played a round of Spanish Jeopardy and let's just say it was muy malo (very bad).

Pre-Kindergarten 3 parents satisfied their hunger for knowledge in Ms. Porter's class. Besides adding and substracting numbers, parents and students worked collaboratively to create edible art! How scrumptious!

Ring the alarm! Ms. Clay and Ms. Umez's first graders beat their parents to bell each time answering language, math and Black History questions in a trivial pursuit-esque game.

The Imani School Fine Arts Department demonstrated why it is one of the best in the city. From seasoned thespians to gifted orators, the Fine Arts Department has an arsenal of talented students on exhibition Tuesday night. Eighth grader Hailey Williams is one such student who is an award-winning orator, essayist and accomplished dancer. She performed her latest gold-medal winning speech, "A Slave Narrative."

Are you a wordsmith? Well, so are the 3-year-olds in Ms. Hogan's class. Come construct sentences as well as listen to students read fluently. Observe as these same pupils conduct a science demonstration: "How solids become liquids."

Here's a challenge: Can you outspell a second grader? Ms. Warren's parents sure thought so, until they were roundly defeated! For the second consecutive year, Ms. Warren's second graders beat their parents in the spelling challenge.

Other activities included:

  • Ms. Harris' second grade class raced to excellence in a math game that combined mental math and accuracy.

  • Mr. Morris' third graders revealed their "Reasoning Mind." The web-based math curriculum Reasoning Mind provides supplementary math lessons to traditional classroom instruction. Ms. Harris and Mr. Morris teach Reasoning Mind in the computer lab and each student is exposed to roughly 3.5 hours of math training at students' own pace.

  • Eighth grade parents played an advanced version of the infamously fun board game Operation. Parents had to discern parts of the human anatomy on an anatomically correct mannequin in Mr. Twymon's middle school science class.

After the fun and games, Ms. Maria and her staff served warm delicious spaghetti with a garden fresh salad, garlic bread the best punch in all of Texas and a slice of cheesecake, chocolate or spice cake.
