Chess Team Conquers Competition!
The 2009-10 Imani Chess Team made history on two accounts: within the school and the Houston Chess Association.
When the Golden Knights competed at Riverwood Middle School on Sept. 12, they placed first in the Elementary School Division - the first ever tournament team victory!
Equally important, it also was the first time that an African-American team has ever won a tournament in the Houston Chess Association's history. I'm sure we all know how important a feat our little trailblazers accomplished. Chess is a game of strategy that requires skilled players to think three and four moves ahead. This type of reasoning and critical thinking is valuable in the classroom to bolster problem-solving in mathematics and foreshadowing in reading. Not many schools can boast they have a chess team, let alone high-ranking, medal-winning team! Kudos to Senor Gerardo Romero and the Imani Golden Knight Chess Team!
